Alvar de Dios

Het pad van Alvar de Dios loopt via de familiewijngaarden in Toro naar een paar rebellen in Gredos en nu weer helemaal terug naar Toro. Alvar sluit zich aan bij Dani en Fer van Commando G (Dani Landi). Aan de hand van deze twee Grenache grootheden in Gredos leert Alvar precies wat je nodig hebt om briljante artisanale wijnen te maken met mediterrane druivenrassen van oude vergeten wijngaarden. Vanaf 2008 begint hij met het kopen van wijngaarden rondom zijn geboortedorp El Pego in Toro. Alvar start in dit perceel met de rode wijn 'Aciano', een tribute aan zijn opa! Met het ontstaan van de DO Arribes del Duero in 2007 gaat Alvar op zoek in deze steile vallei met granieten terroirs naar bijzondere percelen. Hier komen inmiddels de wijnen Vagüera, Camino de los Arrieros en Yavallo vandaan. Tio Uco maakt hij van drie biologische percelen in het noorden van Toro.

Qua fermentatie verloochent Alvar zijn connectie met Gredos niet! Het rood is puur, verkwikkend, elegant, vol en met een fijne zachte finale! De wijnen van Tempranillo zijn voller, natuurlijk qua profiel. Het wit is zeldzaam, eigenwijs (denk aan Fontanasanta) en spannend! We zijn zeer enthousiast over de wijnen van Alvar.

The single-plot red 2018 Yavallo comes from a tiny east-facing vineyard surrounded by oak trees, on red slate of volcanic origin with lots of quartz and planted with a field blend of approximately 60% Bastardo (Trousseau), 10% Tincadeira Preta, 10% Rufete, 15% of other red grapes and some 5% of white varieties. The grapes were foot trodden and fermented with indigenous yeasts, and the wine matured in 300-liter oak barrels for 12 months. The wine is only 13% alcohol and has very healthy acidity and freshness. It feels very shy and reticent, especially on the nose, a sign of a wine with a slow development and which should live for a long time in bottle. It takes time in the glass to start unfurling an array of floral and herbal aromas, with a spicy and earthy touch. It is very balanced and harmonious, with lots of energy and a more expressive palate. The tannins are very fine and leave a dry, chalky sensation with an iron-like twist in the finish. This is less Jura than the 2016, more Duero... shy and subtle, but superb! Only 856 bottles were filled in June 2020. 95/100 Luis Gutiérrez

Alvar de Dios works in Toro and Arribes de Duero, where he produced 54,000 bottles of very personal and characterful wines in 2018, a high-yielding vintage despite the hailstorm in late June in the village of El Pego in Toro (where he's from), where he lost around 60% of the crop. 2018 is a cool vintage with great aging potential.
