Roberto Henríquez

Roberto Henríquez is een van de meest besproken wijnmakers van Chili op dit moment.
Werkend langs de Bíobío rivier ongeveer een uur ten zuiden van Patagual maakt hij spraakmakende wijnen van oude druivenrassen zoals País, Semillón en Corinto. Stokken zijn hier gemiddeld 70 jaar oud met uitschieters naar 200 jaar voor de País. Ongefilterd, niet geklaard, geen koude stabilisatie en minimaal sulfiet zijn kenmerken van de uiterst zuivere en spannende wijnen van Roberto. Ervaring heeft hij opgedaan in o.a. Canada, Zuid-Afrika en met name in de Loire bij René Mosse. In dit wilde westen van Chili, zo’n 500 kilometer ten zuiden van Santiago ontpopt Roberto zicht als één van de wijnmakers die de geschiedenis van zijn Chili omarmt en daarbij wijnen maakt die lijnrecht tegenover de huidige wijnen van het moderne Chili staan.
Geen nieuw hout, teveel extractie en alcohol maar lichtvoetig, uitdagend, dynamisch en spannend. Artisanale wijnen en wijnmaker ten top. Sinds 2019 toegevoegd aan ons assortiment dankzij Midas, Graciás!

Review

The more serious País, the one with more depth, layers and complexity, is the 2020 Santa Cruz de Coya, my benchmark for País. It was produced with grapes from ancient vines on full granite soils with lots of quartz and which tend to deliver the most mineral red. It's from four separate blocks (three kilometers between them) that are still being recovered at the foothills of the Nahuelbuta Coastal Range in Bío-Bío. It's perfumed and elegant, floral even, completely dry and with 12.5% alcohol. This fermented in concrete and stainless steel and matured mostly in concrete, with 20% of the volume kept in concrete for one year. The palate is ethereal but with grip and energy, very fine tannins and a long finish. Superb! 8,000 bottles produced. Luis Gutiérrez 94/100

I taste and buy the wines from Roberto Henríquez in the south of Chile whenever I have the chance (especially his País Santa Cruz de Coya). He now he has an importer in Spain, and he sent me the 2020s a while ago that I saved for this article. Where in the world could you taste different País from different soils? I later tasted his more recent wines (but missed the 2021 Santa Cruz de Coya!) at his new property, where he has a reservoir of old varieties (including Trincadeira Preta, Palomino a.k.a. Listán Blanco and Pinot Noir!). I could see the effect of the brutal 2023 wildfires in the south of Chile, Maule, Itata, Bío-Bío and Malleco. All of the wines are from old ungrafted, head-pruned and dry-farmed vineyards and are fermented with natural yeasts and with very low sulfur. Characterful wines from Itata and Bío-Bío
