Charles Audoin
Review
2020: A terrific introduction to the range is the 2020 Marsannay Cuvée Marie Ragonneau, a medium to full-bodied, ample and concentrated wine evocative of blackberries, raspberries, musk, sweet spices and peonies. Lively and refined, it's a blend of several old-vine parcels dotted around the commune. 90/100 William Kelley
Cyril Audoin has turned in another superb performance in the 2020 vintage, delivering wines of perfume, energy and precision that transcend stereotypes of their appellation. Marsannay nourishes a number of high-quality domaines, and the village offers rich pickings for wine lovers, but Audoin might well be my favorite. What's more, anyone who laments rising prices in the Côte d'Or should take note of the terrific value this estate's wines represent, because quality at this level should honestly cost quite a bit more.
2022: Aromas of cherries, red berries, peonies and spices introduce the 2022 Marsannay Cuvée Marie Ragonneau, a medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy wine that's suave and charming, concluding with a saline finish. As usual, it's a blend of several old-vine parcels dotted around the commune. 91/100 William Kelley
Cyril Audoin presides over this 14-hectare Marsannay reference point, and he has produced excellent wines in both colors (to say nothing of a benchmark rosé) in the 2022 vintage. Soils are cultivated mechanically, and yields are kept moderate in the vineyards. In the winery, extractions are gentle and élevage lasts two winters, beginning in barrels (mostly from François Frères) followed by some months in tank. The style is pure and seamless, emphasizing bright fruit tones and supple tannins in reds and texture combined with freshness in white. What's more, the wines are admirably consistent from vintage to vintage.
