De naam staat voor Sandra, Rori en Chinzia, de familie en trotse eigenaren van dit prachtige wijnhuis op Sicilië, aan de voet van de Etna. Rosario ging op bezoek bij de grote artisale wijnmakers van Europa, werkte een jaar met Frank Cornelissen en richten vervolgens SRC op. 

De vijf hectare die dit familiewijngoed bezit liggen vooral op de oude magmastromen (collata’s) van de vulkaan. De oude stokken (60-100 jaar) staan aangeplant op 700 tot 1000 meter hoogte. In de kelder worden vaten van cement,anfora en grote botti (2500l+) gebruikt om de wijn te laten vergisten en rijpen. Het eindresultaat? Diepe zuren, rijp fruit, geurende specerijen zachte en gulle tannine en een verfijnde lange afdronk! 

Review

A blend of 80% Nerello Mascalese with 20% complementary indigenous grapes, the SRC 2019 Barbabecchi is a micro-production of just 400 bottles. This wine won't be released until early 2022. Fruit comes from a tiny half-hectare terraced and rocky plot in the Contrada Barbabecchi at a cool 900 meters above sea level. The wine is indeed crisp and delineated with lots of small berry fruit, wild rose, crushed stone, smoke and balsam herb. There is a lot of aromatic complexity here, all revealed in small and delicate doses. This is a very smooth, silky and elegant Etna red that should hold steady to the 10-year mark. 94/100 Monica Larner 

SRC is a producer I discovered about five or six years ago, and I have been excited about their results ever since. These are fabulous wines that flaunt naked fruit flavors and lots of authentic character. This year, the estate is releasing a whole slew of exciting single-vineyard wines: Rivaggi, Barbabecchi, Alberello and Pirao (which is Carricante). In fact, the SRC team is currently working to restore and revive ancient vines in the Contrada Pirao, located at 950 meters in elevation.
