Enkircher Ellergrub - Riesling (20)
Riesling | 80+ jaar oude stokken, ungrafted | blauw schiefer | monopole wijngaard van 2,1 hectare | echte ‘sponti’ riesling | rijp fruit | smokey | diepgang | zeer grote wijn | potentieel tot 40-50 jaar verder rijpen | 16 gram restzoet, 12% alcohol
Immich Batterieberg
94/100 Stephan Reinhardt
Review
From ancient, partly ungrafted vines, the 2020 Enkircher Ellergrub Riesling is white-golden in color and opens with a clear, fine and very complex as well as delicate bouquet of ripe fruit and finely weathered blue slate notes. This is amazingly fine again but also generously ripe, yet everything seems to be so easily interwoven. Bottled three weeks ago, this is a full-bodied, round and elegant Riesling that, again, didn't ferment to fully dry, which gives slightly sweet (or round) fruit but also lush, mouth-filling and silky-textured fruit with remarkable finesse. The finish is long and harmonious, very elegant and sublime. Many Riesling lovers will adore this wine immediately (and with the right dish, such as poultry in cream sauce with morels or porcini, with good reason), yet I'd opt to cellar it for about a decade. In any case, you can expect to enjoy a great Mosel Riesling when it's Immich's 2020 Ellergrub. 12% stated alcohol, 16 grams of residual sugar per liter. Natural cork. Tasted on November 1, 2021. 95/100 Stephan Reinhardt
"2020 was a very nice vintage for us," says general manager Gernot Kollmann. "We got a lot and good grape material for CAI and Detonation and also considerably more concentrated grapes than initially thought. The alcohol yield was also higher than thought during the measurements. Even though it is clearly lower than 2018 and 2019, in the end it was only 0.3% less alcohol than last year." The 2020s Zeppwingert, Batterieberg and Ellergrub are three world-class Rieslings, even if not fermented to fully dry. There are still two reserve wines in the cellar, one from the Batterieberg, the other from the Ellergrub. Those two reserve Rieslings will not be released until "sometime in 2022."
