José García

Bierzo, een gebied wat zich in 15 jaar heeft ontwikkeld tot een van de topgebieden van Spanje. Gelegen tussen Galicië en Castilla y León vinden wij José García, een wijnmaker die staat voor identiteit en herkenbaarheid in de wijn van de regio Bierzo. Zijn rode top cuvées uit Corullón en Valtuille zijn bijzonder fraai. Er komt eind 2020 een speciale botteling van een single vineyard 'Fontouliña', een micro plot van 0,4 ha naast La Faraona (Palacios) geplant door de opa van José. De witte wijn die hij maakt hebben een pittig Mediterraans karakter, eigenzinnig van oude klonen Godello met soms een ontwikkeld randje. Het rood mooi puur en diep en verfijnd. Een nog jong wijnhuis met een enorme potentie!

Review

The 2020 Unculín Blanco is even better than the already impressive 2019. A blend of Godello and Doña Blanca, it is austere and reveals a light to medium-bodied palate with a moderate 12.2% alcohol and a low pH of 3.0 and 7.4 grams of acidity. The vines are in Valtuille on sand, clay and stone soils. After macerating with the skins for 24 hours, the grapes were pressed, and half of the juice was let to settle and the other half fermented with all the solids, the Doña Blanca in an oval oak foudre and the Godello in stainless steel, all with indigenous yeasts. It matured with the lees for five months. It's tasty, serious and dry—a white that can develop in bottle. 8,000 bottles were filled in August 2021. 92+/100 Luis Gutiérrez

The range of wines from José Antonio García keeps growing, and the quality is still getting better and better. From 2020, he has village wines from Valtuille and Corullón and the Unculín Mencía is also Vino de Villa. He works 25 hectares of old vines in Valtuille de Abajo and Corullón and produces 80,000 bottles. Some of the new wines are the best I've seen from him. A name to follow in Bierzo.
