Review
Across the board, the Giuseppe Mascarello estate produced 40% less Barolo in 2014 due to the difficulties of the vintage. The 2014 Barolo Villero was also hit by lower production numbers making the wine more difficult to locate at your local merchant. However, this expression from Castiglione Falletto's famed Villero site is worth seeking out because those lower yields resulted in careful and impressive workmanship. This wine is the most open and expressive of the three single-vineyard Baroli, and it is also the most rich. There is an almost meaty or fat quality to the fruit that cedes elegantly to exotic fruit, spice and crushed mineral. This vintage stands out as different, but it certainly holds it own.
The 2017 Barolo Villero is visibly darker with opulent fruit, blackberry confit, potting soil and licorice. The wine is layered and bold, but it also shows a soft side with sweet fruit that spreads evenly over the palate. The 2017 vintage is similar to 2015, both are considered hot and dry growing seasons, delivering ripeness and textural weight. The main difference would be that 2015 had more structure, and 2017 has more plush layering. 95/100 Larner
