Knebel

Acht hectare op een prachtig stuk in het noorden van de Mosel, dat is de plek waar Matthias Knebel zijn wijnen verbouwd en maakt. De Blauschiefer en Rotschiefer bodems glooien hier stijl naar boven, een zeer indrukwekkend en eeuwenoud landschap. Matthias staat sinds 2009 aan het roer van het familiewijngoed. Er worden tijdens het proces geen additieven gebruikt (naast sulfiet), de wijnen vergisten spontaan en rijpen een deel op grote eikenhouten foudres. De wijnen die hij maakt zijn loepzuiver, energiek en je proeft de warme terrassen terug in de wijn. Sinds 2017 heeft Knebel zijn intreden gedaan bij de VDP en staat sindsdien bekend als een aanstormend talent voor Duitsland en de Mosel.

The golden-yellow 2017 Röttgen Trockenbeerenauslese offers an impressively clear yet intense and highly refined bouquet of small, perfectly ripe and healthy mirabelles, crushed slate and honey notes. On the palate, this is already a legend: lush yet highly refined, piquant and terribly fresh. This is a highly concentrated TBA with utmost elegance, finesse and stimulating salinity. Mainly due to frost and a rapidly spreading botrytis before the harvest, Mathias Knebel yielded no more than 20 hectoliters per hectare in 2017, which is similarly low like it was in 2013. "We discarded everything that wasn't perfect, which reduced our yields further," Knebel says. Since he doesn't accept botrytis in his dry wines, these are very pure and tight, sometimes even challenging at this early stage, even though the Uhlen GG already shows its class terribly well. The sweet wines, however, belong to the top of the top in the Mosel Valley again, and the 2017 Röttgen TBA is made for gods. First predicates of the 2018s are also promising, especially the gold-capsuled Röttgen Auslese that will be auctioned.
