Gutérrez de la Vega 

Fantastische aanwinst in 2018!  Een bijzonder verhaal uit Alicante. De enige producent in Alicante die wijn nog op de ouderwetse methode wijn maakt. Volgens Felipé Gutierrez de la Vega was Alicante ooit het toonaangevende gebied om zoete wijnen (Fondillón) in Europa (omstreeks 1850). Dit waren onversterkte wijnen met natuurlijk alcohol van richting de 15%. Hij komt niet helemaal op één lijn met de Alicante D.O en besluit in 2010 in samenspraak met zijn dochter Violetta de D.O te verlaten.Violetta is Frankrijk getraind (Sauternes, Ch D'Yquem) en besluit in de laatste jaren de gisting niet te onderbreken door het gebruik van sulfiet maar door de wijnen licht te versterken met alcohol. De droge zomers van de afgelopen jaren zorgen voor een verlies in oogstvolume van wel 25%. Alle druiven worden hier (Monstrell en Moscatell) overrijp geplukt zodat ze aan de druivenstokken in kunnen drogen, een risico dat in droge jaren tot extreem kleine oogsten kan leiden.

The young fortified sweet red 2018 Recóndita Armonía was produced with Monastrell grapes that want to replicate the Alicante wines from yesteryear, fresher, easier to drink and with a shorter élevage. It's purple, dense and juicy with 15% alcohol and 150 grams of residual sugar after maturing in barrel for one year. It felt strongly varietal, fresh and a little lighter, with classical notes of tree bark and carob beans, a touch of bay leaf that makes it faintly balsamic and less sweet in the palate, with a little less sugar, but I think the sensation is even less because of the higher freshness. 3,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in December 2019. 92/100 Luis Gutiérrez

Gutiérrez de la Vega is better known by their sweet whites from Moscatel grapes, but the second generation, Violeta Gutiérrez de la Vega, is pushing for the reds, especially those produced with the Giró grape, a local variety that has for too long been confused with Garnacha. They met some young growers from the region in 2017 and, together with the Alicante University, are conducting a deeper study of the variety and its soils. They work 10 hectares of vineyards and would like to have more, but as it's a very touristy area, the price of the land is exorbitant. Average production is 40,000 bottles per year. They consider 2017 to 2019 cooler years, each with its idiosyncrasies.
